We agreed we had to shut it down, but how? The only way to try to stop the dolphin slaughter was to keep showing up in the remote village of Taiji and go on patrol. We knew we had to monitor, advocate, film, and bring international media attention to the dolphin slaughter and related captures. One of the main reasons that the killing continues is that very few people, both in Japan and around the world, even know it is happening. If you ask the average Japanese person on the street (as was done in The Cove), most will tell you they do not know that dolphins are being killed in Japan and are surprised and even outraged by it.

Something had to be done. I clambered over the beam舒it was a foot or so underwater舒and got into the pen with him. If he wouldn舗t come to my urging, I would simply lead him out. Charlie Brown came over to me, clicking, snorting, and whistling. 舡 I dog-paddled over to the beam, but Charlie Brown hung back. Dolphins are the most empathetic of creatures; at times their insight approaches genius. Some people say this is because their brains are larger than ours, which they are, and so they must be more intelligent.

I got up and went back downstairs to the bar and nursed another beer. Why hadn舗t I taken the second flight to Bimini instead of the first? I glanced at myself in the mirror. Face tense, mouth taut, eyes with a fanatical gleam. It was amazing that I hadn舗t been arrested for looking like this.
