Learning and teaching of American Studies 29 In many respects, the examination of the “environment” reflects the conversation of a multiplicity of approaches typical of American Studies classrooms and of American Studies in general: as a threatened material reality (deep ecology); as a gendered discourse (environmental justice; ecofeminism) driven by a “masculinist impulse to imagine and experience the land as feminine […] situat[ing] nature, women, and ethnic minorities as passive ‘others’ against which the Anglo-American male constructs himself” (Alston), or as a politically and socially activist movement.

At many universities, younger faculty rejected the role of professors as politically neutral transmitters of knowledge, and graduate students successfully pressed for representation in the national council of the American Studies Association (Cowan; see Chapter 13, 150–52). In the late 1970s, newly institutionalized interdisciplinary programs and sub-fields emerged in the academy. Programs and curricula like Women’s Studies, Queer Studies, Asian American Studies, African American Studies, Chicano and Chicana Studies, Ethnic Studies, or Postcolonial Studies contributed to a new understanding of American society and culture that emphasizes various dimensions of cultural difference in terms of “race,” class, ethnicity, or gender.

Academic subjects are complex and dynamic (even if they are sometimes given the appearance of being monolithic and fixed). To teach and to learn in any complex field always means to find approaches that suit both one’s own contexts, as a student and as an instructor, and one’s research interests. Such approaches are like access roads you take from where you are to where you would like to be. In terms of teaching and learning, this means that a useful approach to a subject meets you as close as possible to “where you are”: working with what you already know, acknowledging your own cultural, social, linguistic situatedness within a complex world.
