Put on light, loose clothing. Exercise vigorously for at least half an hour. You might run, play a competitive game of basketball, do calisthenics, or engage in any other form of exercise that will make you perspire. After exercising, remove your clothes and dry yourself thoroughly with a towel before weighing yourself again. Record your weight. How much weight did you lose? What percentage of your body weight did you lose? If possible, repeat this experiment under different weather conditions.

Hold both hands in the moving air coming from a fan. Which hand feels cooler? Repeat the experiment when both hands are dry. Do both hands feel about the same now? You may have seen a wet road or sidewalk become dry after a rainstorm. The water evaporates; it changes from a liquid to a gas. You may also have noticed that the water evaporates faster when a wind is blowing. The same thing happened to the water on your hand when you held it near the fan. Water, like all substances, is made up of molecules.

Even when the heat of summer raises air temperatures above 100°F (38°C), your body temperature changes very little. How can your temperature remain nearly constant even when the air around you is warmer than your body? Sitting in front of an electric fan helps to keep you cool, but does the fan cool the air? To find out, hang a household thermometer near the center of the room to measure the temperature of the still air. After a few minutes, read and record the temperature. Next, turn on the fan.
